Seven of the eight rented jeepneys apprehended by officers from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board Region 11 are being asked to pay a P60,000 fine each.
According to the authorities, the drivers were impounded for not following their regular routes. They say this despite the drivers being privately-rented to bring the delegates to the freedom park.
Moreover, as the student leaders pointed out while negotiating with the DCPO, only the eight jeepneys carrying the UP delegates were intercepted despite many other jeepneys on the road diverging from their regular routes.
They said that far from “just implementing the law” as the DCPO claimed, they were being singled-out to prevent them from protesting.
The student leaders also slammed the police officers for forcing the drivers to go immediately to the Land Transportation Office despite their pleas to allow the drivers to speak to a lawyer who was already on the way.
