Dr. Tony Leachon warns that the Philippines may end up wasting more than a million doses of AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccines if the current pace of vaccinations does not speed up. The AZ vaccines are set to expire in June.
Leachon also notes that Local Government Units (LGUs) are still loaded with a total of three million vaccines from Sinovac which are yet to be administered to citizens.
As the Duterte administration’s vaccination drive stumbles, the Philippine economy has reportedly shrunk by 4.2% during the first quarter of 2021 despite the government’s unwillingness to dole out substantial aid in favor of austerity measures.
Critics have long called for President Duterte to focus on ending the COVID-19 pandemic instead of hurling insults and undermining Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
