{"id":5904,"date":"2023-03-05T12:59:17","date_gmt":"2023-03-05T04:59:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csspsinag.wordpress.com\/?p=5904"},"modified":"2023-03-05T12:59:17","modified_gmt":"2023-03-05T04:59:17","slug":"red-tagging-is-default-when-govt-fails-constituents-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sinag.press\/news\/2023\/03\/05\/red-tagging-is-default-when-govt-fails-constituents-act\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cRed-tagging is default when gov\u2019t fails constituents,\u201d \u2013 ACT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Alliance of Concerned Teachers slammed Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte\u2019s statement calling the weeklong transport strike next week \u201cpointless and \u201ccommunist-inspired,\u201d saying that instead of red-tagging, she should instead be addressing the needs of students and teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRed-tagging has always been the default scapegoat of the powers-that-be each time they are criticized for their policies and decisions that are problematic and detrimental to the interests of their constituents,\u201d said ACT Philippines Chairperson Vladimer Quetua.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n<!--noteaser-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-thumbnail\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sinag.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/by-sinag-staff.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sinag.press\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/by-sinag-staff.png?w=92\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3593\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Alliance of Concerned Teachers slammed Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Duterte\u2019s statement calling the weeklong transport strike next week \u201cpointless and \u201ccommunist-inspired,\u201d saying that instead of red-tagging, she should instead be addressing the needs of students and teachers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRed-tagging has always been the default scapegoat of the powers-that-be each time they are criticized for their policies and decisions that are problematic and detrimental to the interests of their constituents,\u201d said ACT Philippines Chairperson Vladimer Quetua.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the aforementioned statement, Duterte red-tagged ACT Phiippines, calling it \u201c a lover of the useless ideologies espoused by the New People\u2019s Army, the Communist Party of the Philippines, and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines,\u201d and claiming that the group wanted the country\u2019s children to remain uneducated and poor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The teacher\u2019s group responded, however, pointing out that it was ironic for the DepEd secretary to say so despite admitting a month prior that the government has failed to meet the needs of the education sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKami pa ba na araw-araw ay binabata ang lahat ng balakid, maturuan lamang ang aming mga estudyante? This is a big insult to our teachers who ensure the delivery of education come hell or high water\u2014despite the classroom shortage, lacking laptop and teaching materials, large class size, mounting non-teaching duties, measly salaries, delayed benefits, and many other problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Duterte dismisses drivers\u2019 concerns, \u201cfails to learn from history,\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her statement, Duterte claimed that the transport strike would be a \u201cpainful interference in our efforts to provide solutions to the problems besetting our education system and will only exacerbate the learning hardships of our students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as several progressive groups have pointed out, worker strikes have been an essential tool in forwarding concerns often set-aside by governments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe concurrent Secretary of Education fails to cite how this transport strike is \u2018communist-inspired\u2019, fails to learn from history that workers\u2019 strikes resulted into much of our well-deserved rights,\u201d said Kej Andres, Student Christian Movement of the Philippines Spokersperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andres added that Duterte \u201cfails to recall that learning hardships has been the policy failure of both the Duterte and Marcos, Jr. regimes during the pandemic, and fails to have compassion to the point that her red-tagging of the jeepney strike is her sinister way of illegitimizing the genuine call of drivers for genuine rehabilitation and livelihood,\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anakbayan National Chairperson Jeann Miranda also lamented the government\u2019s use of red-tagging to dismiss the valid concerns of the affected Jeepney operators and drivers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hindi &#8220;communist-inspired&#8221; ang welga. Ito ay inspired nang walang pakundangan na pag-apak ni Marcos Jr. at Duterte sa kabuhayan ng mga tsuper at operator. Imbis na subukang ilayo ang suporta ng mamamayan sa strike, bakit hindi nalang niya intindihin ang krisis sa edukasyon bilang DepEd Secretary?&#8221; she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACT, meanwhile, highlighted how the strike \u2013 including the forced Jeepney Phaseout it is resisting \u2013 would affect commuters, and urged the Department of Education to consider these circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSec. Duterte should open her eyes to the reality that our schools, teachers and students do not live in a vacuum.
